As part of the Wireless Gecko portfolio, these Bluetooth® Low Energy SoCs offer superior RF performance and larger memory options, on-chip capacitive touch, and more low-power peripheral and sensor interfaces, with enhanced encryption acceleration.
Silicon Labs EFR32BG12 and EFR32BG13 Blue Gecko SoCs, available from Mouser Electronics, integrate a high-performance 32-bit 40 MHz ARM® Cortex®-M4 core with 2.4 GHz and sub-1GHz radio transceivers. Compared to previous generations of Blue Gecko devices, the EFR32BG12 and EFR32BG13 Blue Gecko SoCs have larger memory capacities: the EFR32BG12 offers 1 MB of flash and 256 KB of RAM, while the EFR32BG13 offers 512 KB of flash and 64 KB of RAM. This significant memory expansion facilitates the development of feature-rich, complex Internet of Things (IoT) applications that support multiple protocol stacks, real-time operating systems such as Micrium OS, backup images of devices, and for field upgrades to extend Over-the-air (OTA) updates for the life of IoT products.
The EFR32BG12 and EFR32BG13 Blue Gecko SoCs feature a 2 Mbps Bluetooth PHY, which provides sufficient throughput for applications running a Bluetooth 5 compliant stack. Compared with Bluetooth 4, the Bluetooth 5 standard has 4 times the transmission distance, 2 times the speed, 8 times the broadcast performance, and enhanced coexistence with other wireless IoT protocols. Both SoCs also support a robust set of peripherals, including a hardware cryptographic accelerator, 12-bit analog-to-digital converters (ADCs), digital-to-analog converters (DACs), a 12-channel peripheral reflex system and various communication interfaces. In addition, both SoCs offer several security options including AES, Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC), SHA-1 and SHA-224/256 using 128-bit or 256-bit keys.
The EFR32BG12 and EFR32BG13 Blue Gecko SoCs also include an on-chip oscillator, eliminating the need for an off-chip 32 KHz crystal typically required by Bluetooth Low Energy devices. This integrated high-accuracy low-frequency resistance-capacitor oscillator (PLFRCO) can replace 32kHz crystals for high-volume product designs, helping developers save BOM costs while complying with Bluetooth Low Energy sleep clock accuracy specifications. PLFRCO ensures a robust and reliable Bluetooth Low Energy connection across the entire operating temperature range.
