SEMI, the international semiconductor industry association, predicts in its annual semiconductor industry silicon shipment report that global silicon wafer shipments will increase by 2.4% year-on-year in 2020, continue to grow in 2021, and reach a record high in 2022.
Silicon wafers are the core manufacturing materials of semiconductors. Before SiC and GaN are applied on a large scale, they will occupy the dominant position of semiconductor materials for a long time. Global silicon wafer shipments totaled 11.81 billion square feet in 2019, down 7 percent from the record high in 2018.
The latest report from SEMI pointed out that global silicon wafer shipments are showing a recovery trend. Clark Tseng, director of industry research and statistics at SEMI, said: “As the pandemic continues and digitalization is accelerating, changing business and service models worldwide, we expect demand for silicon wafers to continue to grow over the next two years.
