In recent years, the world’s population has grown rapidly, and metropolitan areas in particular have attracted more and more residents. In such places where arable land is limited but delivery must be timely, plant lighting has significant advantages. Advanced lighting technology can create a specific lighting environment and provide an ideal light source that can promote plant growth, or cultivate plants with certain characteristics. In the gloomy season, many people have experienced the effects of insufficient light. With the shortening of sunshine time, people will be more prone to fatigue and burnout. The same is true for plants-if they don’t get enough light, they won’t be able to photosynthesize effectively. Plant growth mainly requires red light (wavelength 640 to 700nm) and blue light (wavelength 400 to 490nm). Among them, red light can increase the output of plant biomass.

The new generation of Oslon Square ultra-red light with a wavelength of 660nm is the flagship model of Osram Opto Semiconductors’ full series of plant lighting products. In addition to excellent luminous efficacy, the new generation of Oslon Square ultra-red light can also obtain a radiant flux of 1.030mW at a light conversion rate of 73%, as well as a current of 700 mA and an efficiency of 4.0 µmol/J as high as 5.7 µmol/s. The luminous flux enables greenhouse operators to obtain higher yields. In applications with higher efficiency requirements, the LED can achieve a conversion rate of 78% at a drive current of 350 mA, a conversion rate of 80% at a current of 250 mA, and an efficiency of 4.6 µmol/J. In addition to top efficiency values, the new generation of Oslon Square ultra-red light also has an ultra-long service life of more than 100,000 hours and can withstand high temperature environments. This surface mountable part is also equipped with a ceramic package and a solid silicone lens.

Yong Sheng Chew, Product Manager of Osram Opto Semiconductors, said: “The plant lighting market is booming. Through continuous optimization and provision of updated products, we have maintained a leading position in this market. The significant increase in efficiency will effectively help customers save energy. The latest Oslon Square super red LED also uses a compact design size of 3.0 mm x 3.0 mm, allowing greenhouse owners to easily update the existing lighting system.”

Osram’s plant lighting technology not only helps growers produce pesticide-free fresh food in a small space, but also allows consumers living in cities to get fresh and healthy food faster.
